5 warning signs of outdated wiring

Older homes hide their problems well. These are the signals worth taking seriously.

The short version

Wiring rarely fails loudly. It fails as small annoyances that are easy to normalize: the light that flickers when the dryer starts, the outlet that only grips a plug at an angle, the breaker you’ve learned not to load. Here are the five signs we take seriously on every inspection.

The five signs

One: lights that flicker or dim when appliances start. Two: warm or discolored outlets and switch plates. Three: frequent breaker trips on the same circuit. Four: two-prong outlets, or no GFCI protection near water. Five: any burning smell, buzzing, or crackling from walls or the panel.

What to do about it

One sign alone is worth a mention on your next service visit. Two or more — or anything involving heat or smell — deserves an inspection now. A one-hour inspection with a prioritized report tells you what’s urgent, what can wait, and what’s fine.
